Shelton is a town in Connecticut, located in the western part of the state. As of the 2010 census, its population was 17,876. The original name for Shelton was "Middletown". It became Shelton when it became a town and then a city in 1887. The city had no boundaries until 1959, when it annexed parts of Derby and Bloomfield townships. The population of Shelton rose to 21,754 by the 2010 census, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in Connecticut. The first settlers to what is now Shelton arrived on May 15, 1692 by horse and wagon from Hartford. They were led by Captain John Winthrop who founded what would become Hartford County with his land grant from King Charles II. At that time there were only four families living in what is now Shelton: Winthrop's five children and their spouses plus their two servants; Samuel Puckett (of Snake Hill); Nicholas Eastman (of Saybrook); and Job Cline (of Farmington). The first post office called "Middletown" was established in 1793, but it was renamed "Shelton" after Amos Laddes Shelton III who donated land to make the town square where public meetings could be held. In 1827, following another donation from Mr. Laddes Shelton III, an armory and courthouse were erected on Shelby Street between Main Street and Chapel Street which served as both municipal buildings as well as courtrooms for many years until they were replaced by the present structure on Main Street in 1959. In 1867–68 about 200 residents voted to incorporate as a city under the leadership of Mayor Edward Willard Harper with a view to more efficiently manage affairs within our rapidly growing community which at that time numbered 524 citizens [Note 1]. Our incorporation came into effect on January 1st 1870 with Mayor James Jepson serving as our first mayoralty until his death on November 3rd 1871 after serving for six terms total including three terms as mayor during which time we achieved great credit for having successfully managed so much during this early period while still maintaining good relations with our neighboring communities through cooperation or joint ventures such as those described below: We built several large blocks of commercial building including two shops fronts – one near Quincy Market (now known as Central Square) downtown while also erecting an Exchange Block next door at Second & State Streets; we opened up some acres along North Main Street between State & Quincy Streets allowing us access not only to market forces but also new transportation opportunities brought about by locomotive travel down that street today’s Broadway Subway Station being just south of Second & state Streets; we constructed several homesites well away from residential areas providing open space for agricultural use] In 1903 authorities decided that Lansdowne Avenue should be widened somewhat due to increasing carloads entering town limits causing delays at various stores along Lansdowne Avenue waiting almost three hours sometimes longer outside than inside some stores while other shoppers experienced little or no wait times inside store entrances even though Lansdowne Avenue remained closed off completely inside most weeks during prohibition]; finally On October 10th 1906 voters re-elected Mayor James Jepson with over 60% majority vote passing an ordinance establishing constituional government providing all citizens regardless sex color or national origin full voting rights beginning March 4th 1907 thereby creating precedent setting democratic procedures used throughout CT society today]. Mayor Jepson moved into his present house at Third & Church Streets upon takingoffice becoming America's first African American Mayor ever elected directly from office instead of via nomination process.] Today ShelTON has become one of THE fastest growing cities in Connecticut!
