In the early 1800s, ammunition production in Shelton was quite limited. However, over time, this changed as a result of the increasing demand for firearms and artillery by the United States. The first ammunition plant in Shelton was built on State Street in 1824. The plant produced small arms ammunition for use by local militias and also manufactured cannons and artillery. In 1855, a larger plant was constructed on Broadway Avenue and this facility became known as “the Arsenal” because it produced high-quality munitions for American military use. Today, the Shelton Armory continues to play an important role in Connecticut's arsenal industry. It produces both new types of ammunition as well as old favorites like shot rounds, cannon balls and rifle bullets. Shelton, Connecticut is a small town in Norwalk County, Connecticut. The population was 10,500 at the 2010 census. It is the 9th-most populous town in Connecticut. The town is bordered by Norwich to the south and east, West Hartford to the north, Bridgeport to the west and south and Stratford to the northwest. Shelton is part of the New Britain–Norwich–Bridgeport metropolitan area. The first European settlers in Shelton were white people from England who arrived in 1634. They built a small cabin on what is now Park Avenue. In 1785, Thomas Phelps bought land in present-day Shelton from John Webster for $1 per acre. He named it Phelps Heights after his father-in-law, Noah Phelps (1641–1710). In 1824, Increase Mather became one of America's leading patriots and donated land to build a schoolhouse on Park Avenue. The school was started as an academy but changed its name to Mount Holyoke Academy in 1828 because of its affiliation with Mount Holyoke College (now Harvard University). In 1836, John Fenton bought land adjacent to present day Shelton from Increase Mather for $2 per acre and renamed it Fenton Heights after himself. He also built a home there which served as his headquarters during many of America's wars including against Mexico and Canada. By 1840, about 50% of all families in Norwalk lived within 3 miles (5 km) of their homes; this distance has not been exceeded since then! On July 6, 1903 – just days before Norwalk's incorporation into cityhood – commissioners voted unanimously to change the name of Shelton from "Norwich" (population 3200) to "New Britain." At that time it had been only known as "ShelTON." This was done largely due to suggestions by Revd Jeremiah Norton (1807–1892) who had moved here when he was appointed pastor of St Andrew’s Episcopal Church (later renumbered First Parish Church), located on Main Street between Water Street and Washington Boulevard: “I desire especially that our place be called New Britain so conspicuous will it be throughout this community that we are One People under God...Eagerly do I look forward with feelings both pleasure and pride that our connection with Our Lord Jesus Christ may be constantly preserved…” Norton led parish services at First Parish until 1934 when he resigned due health reasons; he was succeeded by Revd George Hales Sibley (1887–1965). The townsite developed rapidly following incorporation into cityhood: new businesses were opened up such as a grocery store/ bakery on Main Street near Meeting House Road in 1908; two insurance companies opened offices there soon afterwards; schools were established including Mount Holyoke Academy which became an all-girls high school in 1941; churches were established including Holy Trinity Protestant Episcopal Church which serves today as Our Lady Of Good Hope Roman Catholic church; lawn care services were offered beginning in 1916 by Mrs Gertrude Morse Van Arsdale Harper; post office service began operation there on October 15th 1915 serving residents until 1945 when it transferred over permanently to Bridgeport Post Office where it remains today.(see photo right) Today much of what once characterized rural life has vanished behind Sheridan Road although some old barns still stand providing shelter for local animals during winter weather conditions.(photo left)

Shelton was founded in 1693 by John Shelton and his family. The town originally consisted of a small village, known as "The Pale," located on the east side of the Connecticut River. In 1832, Shelton and other towns in Hartford County were annexed by New Haven City. This led to increased competition for land and resources between New Haven City and Shelton. In 1857, following an effort by members of the General Assembly to annex all of Hartford County into New Haven City, Shelton voted against annexation. The vote represented a significant shift in sentiment within Shelton towards independence from New Haven City. Shelton enjoyed some success during its early years as an agricultural center. A number of small farms dotting the town developed successful agriculture businesses during this time period. However, after World War II saw an increase in industrial activity in Shelton, these businesses began to decline rapidly. Today, most residents are self-employed or work in related industries outside of agriculture or manufacturing.
