In 1784, Norwich became an independent town after merging with neighboring Bridgeport and West Hartford. On January 1, 1889, Norwich joined the new state of Connecticut as a city under the name of "Norwich". The city's original downtown district is now known as the North End. Norwich has been home to many notable people including: The first white person to live in what is now Norwich was John Winthrop in 1670. He built a cabin on land he had acquired from the Narragansetts Indian tribe before moving westward into modern-day Connecticut with his family and ten others. The town was formally organized on February 12, 1784 by Mayor Moses Coffin and Town Clerk Samuel Atherton with 1 vote against 2 due to lack of representation from Bridgeport at that time. After being platted out and having its first meeting held inside present-day Union Hall (now called Greenfield Village), much work needed to be done before it could become an attractive community for residents such as themselves who had recently moved away from larger towns like Hartford or Worcester. This included completing streets and erecting homes which were all interconnected using footbridges until 1854 when water transportation became available making traveling between these small towns much easier than it once was; this also contributed to Norwich becoming one of only two cities in New England without any streetcars until they were added to Hartford Circulator service in 1925! Many famous Norwegians have lived or worked here over time including Prime Minister Winston Churchill who spent his early childhood here followed by many other high profile politicians including Ulysses S Grant; General James Lincoln McClellan; Admiral Chester Nimitz during World War II; Drs Martin Luther King Jr., RFK & Bobby Kennedy – all while living either within easy walking distance or just minutes’ drive away (King being assassinated less than a mile from our current site).
