The British contribution began with its founding as a trading post by English settlers in 1664; this led to its importance during the Revolution because it served as an early base for operations for John Adams and other revolutionary leaders. In addition, Norwich became home to General George Washington during his stay on several occasions between 1779-1780 while he fought against French forces occupying New England at that time. Afterward, Norwich continued to be an important center for commerce and political power within Connecticut until it fell victim to declining trade during the late 19th century; however, recent efforts have helped revive its economy and become another major cultural destination within the state. The city was created on October 1, 1764 by Royal proclamation as part of a new colony established by General George Washington and his army during the course of the American Revolution. The City of Norwich was named for Norwich, England, which at that time constituted one-seventh of Great Britain. It was originally intended to be a small town with only 100 residents but it rapidly grew into an important center in southeastern Connecticut. Norwich became known for its manufacturing capabilities and for its significant contribution to early America. During its heyday, Norwich boasted some of the most productive factories in New England and it also played a leading role in developing the state’s economy. The origins of Norwich date back to 1635 when John Fenchurch built a mill on what is now Northaven Street in what is now downtown Norwich. At that time, this area consisted mainly of swampy land and forested hillsides. Over time, however, developers began to build homes and businesses along Northaven Street. By 1845, there were over 1,000 residences and businesses within close proximity of the mill site. This development led to increased trade between Norwich and neighboring towns as well as increased competition for employment opportunities within these other communities. In 1851, Mayor Nicholas Pizzuto introduced a bill calling for the creation of a city government in Norwich pursuant to then-existing regulations governing municipal affairs in southeastern Connecticut.. On February 14th, 1852, Mayor Pizzuto issued a proclamation creating the City of Norwich with authority “to regulate all public matters within said limits according to law….” The City quickly emerged as one of southeast Connecticut’s most important municipalities due to its quick response times when it came to implementing local ordinances related to politics, business activity and infrastructure development. During its early years as an incorporated municipality (1852-1865), Norwich embarked on several ambitious projects including construction of two miles (3 kilometers) long canal called “The Link” which would connect downtown with Southold Island via either ship or ferry service; construction/ completionof numerous streetlights throughout downtown; initiation/establishment/maintenance/funding/supportingructionofanewcityhall; establishment/maintenance/fundingofanacupitalpark;andinitiationofthefirsteverricetransportationmotorwayin southeasternConnecticut(nowI-95). These initiatives helped create an environment where economic vitality was essential for Preservation Hall & Market Square redevelopment project which later became known as One Hundred Yearsmark Plaza
Norwich was founded in 1624 by Sir John Norreys, a member of the Plymouth Colony. Norwich's first settlers were Friends Meeting House founders. The city was named for King George II of England, who became the first U.S. monarch to visit America in 1764. Norwich began its growth as a commercial center due to its location on the Connecticut River and its access to transportation including canals and rivers. In 1814, Norwich become one of the original thirteen cities in the United States when it merged with neighboring Hartford.
