The history of Norwich goes back to 1665 when English colonists arrived in what is now Norwalk County, Connecticut. They named their new settlement "Norwich" after the port of London where they had been trading for years before landing in America. In 1701, the British government granted land to three separate townships: Northampton Township (now Waterford), Easton Township (now parts of Stamford and Bridgeport), and Norfolk Township (now part of Hartford). The area that would become Norwich was included within Easton Township until it split off as its own independent municipality in 1814. Norwich's growth began rapidly during the early 1800s when many new families arrived from New England seeking escape from the great personal financial stresses of the Revolutionary War and later waves of immigrants who came during the 1830s and 1840s. By 1860, Norwich had more than 8500 residents living in 119 buildings scattered throughout nine square miles on Long Island Sound between Newtown Road and Chapel Street near present-day State Street/Qwest Park Plaza Shopping Center. Later that century saw an even greater influx of people as railroad entrepreneurs constructed stations along both sides of Route 9 south from Newtownards junction; this led to increased traffic which required ever-larger lots for development just north of wherepresent-day High School Avenue meets State Street/Qwest Park Plaza Shopping Center today! By 1900, Norwich's population had swollen past 12000 people and numerous structures were erected including churches (St Andrew’s Episcopal Church built about 1815 will still be standing today) schools (Norfolk Academy built about 1830 will still be standing today), businesses (Fenway Woolens Store built about 1850 will now be preserved as Fenway Museum) and residences such as “The Grange” (+/- 400 years old) which stands today iconic image on Main Street just east of Fenway Park! With so much happening right there on site – including major battles fought nearby during times such as World War I & II – it’s no wonder that our downtown skyline features some pretty recognizable landmarks like Qwest Park Plaza Shopping Center (!), Fenway Park (& surrounding neighborhoods!), John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum (!), Eames House (& adjoining neighborhoods!), Asbury Hall (& adjacent neighborhoods!), Allaire Dam (& adjoining neighborhoods!) – you name it! And all these icons are only a sampling compared to what else exists within easy reach either by car or busadinEaston Village shopping center opposite High school Ave.,Quaker Oats Factory building across street from Quaker Oats Factory also known as Wetherspoons Green Dragon Inn - one stop away from everything! In 1909, Norwich merged with neighboring West Haven to form a larger city with over 20K residents extant within five boroughs: Central Business District (CBD), Downtown Business District (Downtown BD&E zone), Southside Business District (Southside BD&E zone), Northside Business District(Northside BD&E zone)), Third Ward Residential Zone(Third Ward RDZ.)and Eastern Townships Zone(Eastern Townships AEZ.). This merger created oneofthe most vibrant downtown areas in allOf Connecticut with multiple cultural attractions available each day making it an ideal place for shoppers or evening out with friends adding another layerto already busy downtown streetscape! In 1536, after years of political instability and civil war, Norwich came under Spanish rule for nearly two centuries. However, the city's fortunes declined during this time, and it reverted back to English control in 1648. After centuries of decline, Norwich regained some of its former stature as an international port during the 19th century; however, it has since struggled to maintain a significant local presence.
