Norwich is a small town in western Connecticut, United States. The population was 12,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bridgeport-Norwich-New Haven metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Norwich were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew on their ship "Nuova Veneta" in 1524. They named it after Venice because of its availability of water supplies and because the then-bishop of Norwich had donated land for a new cathedral. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1764, when they built the town's first house on the east side of Hartford River. By 1800, Norwich had a population of 996. In 1803, Norwich became the capital of Connecticut due to its location as one of three recognized capitals by Act of Congress under President James K. Polk; other two being New York City and Boston. The city also served as the territorial capital from 1824 until Hartford's definition as an independent city in 1828 removed it from that position. In 1898, during John Dickey's reëlection as governor, an investigation revealed irregularities in voting in what was considered one of Dickey's most winsnable races that year; he ultimately won reëlection with 77% of the vote against opponent Samuel Morse who received only 31%. This event helped make Norwich an increasingly progressive city throughout its history which has resulted in several prominent Norwegians such as Bill Gates and Erik Prince having strong roots here including early involvement with Microsoft and Lockheed Martin respectively Norwich is known for its quilt industry, production reaching over 100 million squares per year (previously there was little quilt production outside North America).
