The city also played a significant role in America’s response to World War II with its manufacturing capabilities including producing ships for the Navy or planes for USAF Operation Overlord while also providing foodstuff for troops stationed overseas. After years of decline due largely to suburbanization following World War II, Norwich experienced rapid growth beginning in the late 1990s driven by waves of immigrants who brought their own cultures and values into what had once been an all-white community. This influx led to increased crime rates but also helped spur economic development which has now placed Norwich among the most diverse cities within Connecticutraiding areas such as East End neighborhoods have seen large increases in housing prices while some businesses have successfully exited or relocated outside of Norwich altogether due to competition from more affordable towns near New England airports
