Norwich and its surrounding towns were founded in 1624 by theConnecticut Company. Norwich became a town on April 10, 1814, when it was granted a charter from the Congress of Connecticut. The town's first mayor was John Trumbull. The first post office in Norwich was established on December 12, 1795. In 1834, Norwich became one of the original towns in Hartford County.
