Norwich, Connecticut is home to the oldest continuously operating ammunition store in the United States. The store was founded in 1824 by Captain John H. Brown and his wife Ann. It operated for many years until it closed its doors in 1969. The Norwich Ammunition Company was one of the first companies to produce firearms ammunition in North America. Their products were used by Federal troops during the Revolutionary War and American independence. They also produced artillery rounds during the war and later sold their products to other businesses throughout New England. In 1865, Norwich opened a branch location in Hartford, CT. This branch served as a distributor for ammo from other stores across New England. In 1898, Norwich became an importer of ammunition for European markets after purchasing a company in Brussels, Belgium. In 1916, they began producing firearms ammunition under their own name again. They continued to do so until 1949 when they ceased production altogether due to World War II shortages of munitions。 During World War II, Norwich manufactured approximately 2 million rounds of .50 caliber rifle bullets using both standard lead bullet types and special aluminum alloy bullet types which helped increase accuracy with these weapons while reducing damage done to friendly forces by enemy fire..
