In 1851, Norwich's first Sporting Goods store opened its doors. This store would become one of the most popular in town, and it would be used for both personal use as well as business transactions. The store continued to be a mainstay in the community until 1974. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, people often relied on shotguns for hunting small game such as rabbits or squirrels. However, during World War I, many people turned to airguns for shooting birds because they were more efficient than shotguns at taking down large animals. A number of companies manufactured airguns during World War I (including Browning Hi-Power Company, Rheinmetall-Glock AG & Co., Sturm Ruger & Co., Winchester Repeating Arms Company), but Norwich's firstairgun company was founded by George Winton in 1916. It was called The National Air Gun Manufacturing Company Ltd., and it produced handguns only. Winton initially produced light arms only, but he later expanded his production into rifles and shotguns as well. In 1924 he merged with two other companies to form The Hartford Armory Corporation; this company became very successful over the years manufacturing both handguns and rifles alike. In 1933 Hartford Armory Corporation merged with Colt Firearms Corporation to form Colt Incorporated; this company became one of America's leading firearms manufacturers throughout the 1970s and 1980s!

Norwich is one of five towns in the Hartford-West Hartford Combined Statistical Area (CSA) and the only one in that area not within the New York metropolitan area. It is part of the larger Hartford-New Britain–East Haven CSA. Norwich was first settled by Europeans in 1614 as North Haven when Sir George Acworth founded North Haven Plantation on land he bought from Chief Wabanaki, who had been scalped and his head cut off by English settlers on Long Island Sound. In 1781, Norwich was incorporated as a town under charter from Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts. The first settler to arrive in Norwich were three brothers: Nicholas de la Salle, Pierre De La Salle and Anthony de la Salle who arrived about May 10, 1614 aboard their ship "Nova Scotia" from Plymouth Colony. They came ashore at what is now downtown Norwich after being rowed overland from Saybrook Colony on foot due to lack of water supplies along the coast. In 1642 Samuel Smith arrived with his family from England and established a small farmstead east of present day First Street near what is now High School Field House; this farm would later become known as Smith's Landing which became an important market for local produce during colonial times. A second group of pioneers passed through Norwich in early December 1643 when Captains John Pitcairn and James Cook sailed into harbor on their way to explore Labrador; they left behind four men: Edward Winslow (the Elder), Thomas Osborne (the Younger), Christopher Morison (Christopher) and Joseph Pickering (Joseph). These early settlers were followed soon afterwards by other families such as those of Jonathan Trumbull and Nathanael Greene who arrived just before Christmas 1644 aboard the ships " relief", "fortunate" and "patriots". The construction of roads facilitated access to new settlements throughout much of Connecticut during this time period but it also led to increased traffic congestion on main streets where goods were unloaded onto boats for transport back home or sold locally at marketplaces across town while people walked or took horseback rides to various markets nearby including Watertown and Stratford
