Norwalk is a town in Norwalk County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 9,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Worcester–Bridgeport metropolitan area. Norwalk was first settled by Native Americans in 1636. Its name means "place where the waves crash." The town was founded on April 12, 1795, when Colonel John Montresor donated land to make way for a canal. In 1855, Norwalk became an incorporated municipality and its first mayor was Democrat J.F. Kennedy of Bridgeport; he served until 1865 when Republican Nathan Hale took office and held that position until his death in 1868. In 1860, President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 10408 which ordered all limits on slavery be abolished throughout the United States except within three southern states that had ratified the Missouri Compromise (Kentucky, Virginia, and Arkansas). This order became known as "the Emancipation Proclamation". The towns of Hartford and Westfield were also emancipated by executive order on September 1st 1861; these towns were located east of Norwalk along Route 9 north of Stamford while Westfield lay just south of Route 6 east of Norwich. As a result of this order many white people from those towns moved into Norwalk to take advantage of its new social opportunities and progressivism during Reconstruction-era America. Norwalk's annexation by Bridgeport in 1907 made it one-third separate from Hartford county; this caused some friction among the two towns' residents over education policies and other issues such as zoning regulations which would haverestricted future growth in both communities under single-county jurisdiction status quo (i.e., without input or consent from either community). However problems between Bridgeport's government and residents eventually resolved themselves with both municipalities becoming more equal under state regulation following World War II before gradually reverting back to their former roles as separate but related communities again during the 1970s through 1990s due largely to political subdivisions changing hands multiple times during that time period - most notably during norwegians' own incorporation into Connecticut as well as suburban growth across I-84/I-93 connecting Bridgeport with White Plains Junction/The Bronx – further complicating things for Queryansians trying to understand how their community has changed since then!
