In recent years there has been significant growth in commercial development around town with several high-end hotels/resorts opening up over the past few years along with several large apartment complexes completed or under construction including One Pointe tower complex just north of town across US Highway 9A from where it joins US Highway 1E while also housing two major university campuses - Yale University and Brown University - both within walking distance respectively (though not all students are able to access these universities' campuses). The Town of Norwalk was formed from part of Stamford on May 1, 1814. On July 1, 1815, Stamford voted to become independent and renamed itself Norwich. Norwich became an upscale town by 1850 with well-built homes and large blocks of land adjacent to Lake Champlain for public use and development. A canal was built through Norwich in 1851 and made it easier for goods to reach New York City; this helped make Norwich one of the most prosperous towns in America during its early days. However, trade slowly declined during the mid-19th century as railroad transportation became more available and prices for goods increased along with new transportation methods such as steamships
