Brown and Company which was used on the 1851 Springfield rifle. The Brown & Sharps rifle company was founded in 1854 by John M. Brown and Jesse James Barnes. In 1865, John M. Brown passed away and his son Jesse James Barnes continued to make rifles for the Smith & Wesson company until 1887 when he merged with Winchester Arms Company to form Winchester-Winchester Firearms Corporation (later renamed Winchester Repeating Arms Company). During this time, they also produced shotguns, handguns, and machine guns under various names including Colt Auto Pistol Corporation (now part of Remington) and Wesson Machine Guns Corporation (now part of Sig Sauer). The firstNorwalk gunsmiths were Edwin Howland and Nathan Huffman who formed a partnership in 1847 which lasted until 1850 when Howland left town for unknown reasons. Daniel Webster served as President of Hartford Armory from 1861-1865 while Norwalk's first gunsmith, Edward Griggs worked at Hartford Armory until 1861 when he moved to New Haven CT where he formed an armory partnership with Samuel Colt . From 1865-1867 Griggs served as Superintendent of Arsenal Education at new Haven Arsenal where he developed a system that allowed small arms manufacturers access to accurate equipment for their products.. In 1870-71 Griggs formed another armory partnership with John A. Hobson who manufactured firearms under various nameplates such as Stevens & Sons Co., Harrington & Richardson Co., Gould Manufacturing Company etc.. At this point Hartford Armory had become one large factory manufacturing firearms under many different brand names including Colt Auto Pistol Corporation (now Remington), Winchester Repeating Arms Company (later renamed Winchester), Savage Arms Corp., American Autolite Firearms Manufacturing Inc., Sturm Ruger & Co., among others.. In 1875 Hobson partnered again with George Fenton who became sole owner of Hartford Armory after purchasing Samuel Colt's interest in 1860s company.. During this time period there were numerous technological advances that influenced firearm manufacture including Pritchard's law which stated that energy projectiles become more effective as they travel through air; improvements to cast iron technology which led to increased strength; development of barrelblades; introduction of percussion ignition systems; consolidation of muzzle loading artillery into one industry; use of vacuum devices during shooting – all these changes helped drive innovation within firearms production.. By 1886 all except two firms - Stevens&SonsCo.- had been acquired by Royal Dutch Shell Vereeniging Gunmakers NV but remains active today producing shotgunsunder several brands including Hollandediplomatijn/Sheetalhof or Beretta USA Incorporation along side other business ventures such as ammunition manufacturing facilities throughout Connecticut named after companies owned by Royal Dutch Shell Ltd.: Jericho Armoury Research Center( now part of BenelliUSA ), Naval Weapons Station Crane Point( now defunct ), Newtown Arsenal Ammunition Plant( now defunct ), Stamford Bridge Ammunition Plant( now defunct ).

In 1892, the town of Norwalk organized its first police department. TheNorwalk Rifle and Pistol Museum was established to commemorate this event. In 1893, the town of Norwalk merged with the neighboring towns of East Haven and Milford to form the new city of Stamford. The rifle and pistol museum was transferred from the city of Norwich to Stamford on November 3rd, 1993. On December 2nd, 1999, theNorwalk Rifle & Pistol Museum became part of the newly formed National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). The NSSF oversees firearms regulation in America.
