Norwalk, Connecticut is a town in southern Connecticut. The population was 34,569 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Norwalk Township and the unincorporated community of East Norwalk. The first permanent settler in what is now Norwalk was Nicholas Day, who arrived in 1635 from England. He named his new land "Norwalk." In 1711, George Washington visited Norwalk while on his way to battle with the British at Lexington and Concord. In 1814, during the War of 1812, batteries were built near Norwalk by Captain John Nichols to protect against American attack from Canada. After the war ended, Captain Nichols donated land to make up for lost property. Norwalk became an incorporated town on February 14, 1868. The incorporation made it one of the few towns in Connecticut that did not become part of Hartford when that city was founded in 1865. Norwalk has a rich history dating back to its founding as a small settlement led by Nicholas Day and other pioneers in 1635 BST (Before The Revolution). As early as 1711, George Washington stopped at Norwalks for water supplies on his journey through southern Connecticut into Massachusetts Bay; he called it "the good old country place" because it had no taxes then and there were no military installations nearby like those later developed around Hartford or New London County., In 1814 Captain John Nichols built batteries along US Route 9 near present day Eastnor Village - these defenses helped keep America safe during the War of 1812

In 1892, Norwich enacted an ordinance banning smoking on public property; this ordinance was repealed by Act No. 5 of 1893 (1892). As early as 1830s residents began using fireplaces to heat their homes during cold winter months; however this practice was not common until about 1850 when gas lighting became available for heating purposes throughout Connecticut Valley towns such as Norwich and East Haven.. It wasn't until after World War II that electric lights were introduced into many small towns across America; however large towns such as New York City had been using oil lamps since before that time! It wasn't until 1958 that a light switch was installed at Norwich's Town Hall!!!!
