Norwalk is a town in Norwalk County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–Westchester metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Norwalk was Nicholas-Jacques Bayard in 1664. In 1795, when Norwalk became part of Hartford County, it (along with Plainville) was one of seven towns organized into that county by an act of the General Assembly. The town's post office opened on December 12, 1807. Norwalk developed as a small agricultural community during its early years and had only two stores and 20 residents when it incorporated as a town on April 6, 1868. At the time it consisted of just over 100 acres (40 hectares). The town's growth came about because of its location near major transportation arteries and its close proximity to other villages and towns in Hartford County. After incorporation, Norwalk began to build up its infrastructure including a library, fire department, churches (two being Episcopal), schools (including one for girls), and businesses such as grocery store and bank.
