Norwich has a population of 23,021 as of July 1, 2017 according to the US Census Bureau. Norwalk grew up on the site of two small villages: Stratford (founded 1639) and Watertown (founded 1796). In 1821, after land around Norwich had been claimed by other towns in that county, Norwalk was chartered as a separate municipality with a population of 984 people. Norwich is located northwest of Hartford on NH 114 east of I-95/I-287. According to the United States Census Bureau's report for 2000,[1] the total area is , all land within residential boundaries except for 0.4 square miles (0.8 km²) belonging to Tolland Municipal Airport which is part of Long Island City borough.[2] As of July 1st 2017[3], there were 24,569 people living in Norwich; 11% more than its 2000 figure but down from 15% when it first came into being as an unincorporated community.[4][5] The largest racial group by percentage was African American at 21%. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 8%, followed by White residents at 7%. There were no Asian residents reported as living within city limits as well as there being no reportingSubmitters for any race during that time period[6]. Native Americans make up 2% of Norwich's population according to 2014 estimates though they may have resided here since before then; their dwellings are not registered with the Town Records Department however they are likely still present due to their cultural heritage which includes traditional hunting and gathering activities

The first settler in what would become Norwalk was Nicholas Lowndes who arrived in 1636 from England. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now Main Street which they called "Fenway." In 1711 John Winthrop came to America and established Wappingersbury Plantation in present day Norwalk. In 1801 Josiah Quincy landed at Mystic River with 360 others on the ship "Providence" and founded Quincy Village. He named it after himself and his home state of Massachusetts. The village became an incorporated town in 1847 when all of Fairfield County was organized into one government under the name of Hartford Township Committee District No 1 (later renamed East Hartford). During World War II residents helped build more than 100 military airfields across America through their production of munitions such as Powder Puffs and Cigarettes over radio broadcasts from their homes or businesses. Many people also contributed to local charities such as Stonington's Goodwill Society or Mercy Hospital during wartime times by giving food or clothing to poor families living near military bases around the country. For many years Norwalk was known for its annual July 4th parade which brings thousands of spectators to downtown Norwalk from all over northeastern Connecticut including Bridgeport and Westport as well as Long Island City on Long Island Sound just outside New York City limits
Norwalk is located in Norwalk Township, Connecticut. The township was organized on December 3, 1814. It was named after the town of Norwich, England. The first settler in Norwalk was John McCoy who arrived in 1792.
