Gun targets have been a part of Norwalk, Connecticut's history for many years. The first target was created by Captain John Cushing in 1784. The early guns used small shot and muskets which made target shooting difficult but also dangerous. By 1814, the town had acquired its own cannon and began using them to shoot at targets on Long Island Sound. In 1835, the town built a new arsenal to serve as a training ground for troops garrisoned in New York City during the American Revolution. The old arsenal was used until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. In 1892, the town building was leased to Norwalk Arsenal Co., who continued to use it until 1908 when it became an armory again under the name of Norwalk Arsenal Company. The modernNorwalkArsenal is located at 6 Washington Ave., next to Central High School. It opened in 1912 and has served as home to various artillery units including the Connecticut National Guard Armory Battalion No 1 from 1949-1976 and from 1978-present; norwalk police department's bomb squad unit from 1951-1978; norwalk firefighters' battalion headquarters between 1979-1981; norwegian military forces detachment no 1 (Hvenningen) stationed therefrom 1981-1985; norwich post office (1901) facility now home of our museum; and finally,Norwich Naval Shipyard Museum adjacent property from 1988-. It is one of only three arsenals remaining in America that still housing large caliber cannons capable of firing projectiles up to 100 feet away (.30 MGs). Gunnery practice takes place on two ranges within the complex: Range One features 3 decks with 20 targets each while Range Two has 4 decks with 30 targets each (plus 10 centerfire rifles).
