Norwalk, Connecticut is a town in Norwalk County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 12,790 at the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, there were 11,876 people and 4,724 households residing in the town. Norwich is the largest city in Norwalk and it is part of the New England metropolitan area. Norwalk was founded on May 15th 1664 by Sir John Nor wing and his men who came overland from London looking for a new home. The original settlement was near present day Norwich. In 1701 Dr. Benjamin Rush built a house on what is now Main Street which served as the first courthouse in Norwalk. The old mill that currently stands on Elm Street began operating in 1809 and did until 1868 when it was bought by Samuel Morse who turned it into an experimental works for receiving transmissions over water using cable cars called "Morse's Mill." A plaque located at 204 Elm St commemorates this event. In 1892 base metal plates were added to commemorate 100 years of NORWALK COMMUNITY SERVICE In 1907 construction began on what would become known as State University campus (later renamed Brown University). This campus would eventually be replaced by Ivy League schools such as Yale and Princeton but during its early years NORWALK STATE UNIVERSITY had an extensive collection of buildings including two Gothic Revival style Colleges- The Normal School (now Brown University) and Eastman School of Music (now Rochester Institute of Technology). These institutions remain important today with NORWALK STATE UNIVERSITY continuing to offer many programs which draw students from all over New England including students from Rhode Island On November 20th 1911 NORWALK became one of fourteen towns in Connecticut to secede from state government under the slogan "We Are Not Menstruating". This move helped provide impetus for women’s suffrage throughout much of America althoughConnecticut continued to deny women voting rights until 1978 . Despite this setback however “Norwalk” has since become known for its lively arts scene with several galleries and associated organizations existing downtown along with several fine restaurants including DEEP SEA GRILLS finest seafood restaurant Today Norwalk continues to be a vibrant community with strong cultural ties to both Norwich and Hartford
