Norwalk is a town in Norwalk County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 13,715 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Norwalk County and the second-most populous incorporated town in Connecticut after Norwich. The exact date of when Norwalk became an incorporated town is unknown but it likely dates back to 1795. In 1824, it merged with neighboring Derby to form what would become known as Derby-Norwalk Township. As part of a program launched by then-Governor George Washington in 1832 to promote township consolidation across America, Norwalk Township was split into two townships—Norwalk and Eastnorland—on July 1, 1834. On February 6, 1938, both Norwalk and Eastnorland amalgamated again to form the current Norwalk Township. Norwalk's rich history began with its first settler—John Brown—who arrived on May 10, 1636 from Hartfordshire, England via Watertown and Stamford. Brown erected his cabin on what is now Main Street within present day downtown NorWalk and named it "New Haven." From this initial beginning there have been many owners of land within today's town limits who have made their mark on its history: John Ayer (1811–1874), Amos Kendall (1814–1900), Elijah Morse (1799–1868), Jeremiah Holland (1802–1887) , James Kapp (1800–1892), Augustus Kelley (1796–1864) . Most recently notable residents include Mayor Joe Grosso (1983–present). Today's economy depends largely upon services such as retail trade; transportation; health care services; professional and scientific services; manufacturing; agriculture; tourism; government agencies including local police forces and fire departments as well as numerous small businesses providing jobs for locals not only during normal business hours but also during holiday season months such as Christmas and Easter. There are several large commercial entities located throughout downtown which attract national attention each year during Main Street's annual Christmas parade which begins at 5 p.m., winding its way around the block from City Hall all the way up through downtown until New Haven Avenue closes down for dinner so that merchants can sell their goods direct to consumers!

Norwalk, Connecticut is a town in Norwalk County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 21,737 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1835 as Norwalk Plantation by Captain John Putnam and his wife Abby Putnam. The name "Norwalk" is derived from the Algonquian word nawk-wakka or "place where trees grow." The first settler in Norwalk was Nicholas Hutton who arrived in 1833. Hutton built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. He three years later bought another parcel of land, which he named North norway and developed into what are today's businesses: Hutton's grocery store (1836), Farrington hotels (1838), and Fenton Manufacturing Company (1850). In 1845, Captain John Putnam donated land to build a school for his children; this became known as PUTNAM High School. After captain Putnam's death, his widow Abby put up money to continue the school with assistance from her husband's estate. In 1853 the town got its first synagogue - Congregation Shearith Israel - and soon there were other religious services as well: Temple Emanuel (1854), Congregation Beth El (1855), First Methodist Church of Hartford East Campus (1929), and Trinity Episcopal Church of Hartford West Campus (1966). In 1865 Norwalk got its own railroad station; it would be renamed Stamford when that line merged into the New York Central Railroad system in 1923. A post office called Northwich was established in 1840; it moved to Southport in 1861 but closed in 1865 because of financial troubles related to war efforts. However, records show that an early version of Northwich had been established since 1795 on White Marsh Road east of present-day downtownNorwalk In 1915 businessman Gifford Sayers opened what became one of Norwalk's most popular shopping malls - Sayers Plaza – anchored by Sears & Roebuck department stores along with smaller outlets including JCPenney and Montgomery Ward . This mall continued until 2000 when it was replaced by IMAX movie theater complex – The Mall at Elmira – across from Interstate 95 near Exit 5A . During the Vietnam War era there were several attempts by local youth groups called Operation Homefront to integrate local Vietnamese refugees into society through job training and social activities but these programs never succeeded due to poor communication between organizers and refugees themselves After decades during which enrollment rates decreased as families moved away or out of state for work opportunities during World War II increased again following Korean War service many people decided they did not want their children living next door to servicemen anymore so they sold their homes back East while some residents decided they would move down if needed
