Norwalk, Connecticut is a town in Norwalk County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 10,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–New Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Norwalk was Nicholas Flushing who arrived in 1664 and built a cabin on the east side of what is now Water Street. A year later he married Mary White. In 1668, John Winthrop and his party founded Yale College (now Brown University). In 1701, Samuel Morse invented the telegraph system and Norwalk became one of its original townships. Norwalk was incorporated as a town on April 14, 1820 by act of the state legislature. The first mayor was Nathanial Amesbury. The Town Hall building was completed in 1827 and served as the town's government center until it burned down in 1892. Norwalk's economy changed rapidly after World War II when large numbers of workers moved into the area to take advantage of new jobs opportunities created by defense industries such as aircraft manufacturing and automotive production. After years of decline during the 1990s recession, job growth resumed in recent years due to increased economic development across central Connecticut including Norwalk's inclusion within New Britain metropolitan area under Governor Dannel Malloy's " Connecticut Compete 2020" initiative which has seen many businesses relocate to central Conn., most notably startups like LinkedIn and Uber
Norwalk was founded in 1794 by John Norwalk and his wife, Susanna. The town was named after Captain Norwalk of the HMS Dolphin, who convoyed goods from New England to Nova Scotia. The first store in town opened in 1802. In 1812, Norwich became a part of Connecticut.
