Norwalk, Connecticut is a small town located in the state of Connecticut. The population was 7,783 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New Haven–Milford–Bridgeport metropolitan area. The town has been inhabited for over a hundred years and developed around the Norwalk Rubber Company, founded in 1872 by two men from Norwich, England. The company manufactured rubber products and exported them to various parts of the world. In 1954, the company merged with American Fertilizer Company to become United States Rubber Corporation. Norwalk was incorporated as a townsite on December 12, 1892, when it became a separate village from Norwich. In 1907, it became an unincorporated municipality under the name of Norwalk Village. On October 15, 1912, it changed its name to Norwalk Township due to pressure from other towns in the area that had adopted similar names. The township was renamed Norwalk after Samuel Norwalk*, who served as its first mayor and treasurer throughout its early years.
