It is difficult to know just how much ammo has been manufactured in Norwalk, Connecticut over the years. Even though this city of around 100,000 people has had a presence in the ammunition industry for over 140 years, it is not clear exactly how many rounds of ammunition have been produced here. However, by 1850, Norwalk had at least one magazine factory and two cast-iron smelters. A decade later, there were six magazines with a total production capacity of 1,500 cartridges per day. The first reloading establishments arrived in Norwalk in the early 1800s; these were located near Easton and Main Streets. In 1922, Norwalk became an official city and began producing its own rounds of ammunition. Ammunition manufacturing continued to grow until 1945 when it centered around the manufacture of rifle bullets only. The current Ammo Manufacturing District was established in 1974 within the boundaries of what was then known as “the Arsenal” industrial area on West Main Street between Park Avenue and Waterbury Road. This district included seven factories that produce both rifle bullets and shotgun shells (five modern plants). Today’s Ammo Manufacturing District produces more than 400 million rounds of ammunition every year – making it one of the most active industries in Connecticut overall! During World War II, Norwalk became an important center for ammunition production due to its location on Long Island Sound between New York City and Albany Island – providing ample shipping lanes for munitions shipments from Europe. Additionally,Norwalk played a significant role in assembling aircraft bombs used during World War II including creating bomb racks for Boeing B-29 bombers. Today’s Ammo Manufacturing District is home to some very successful businesses such as ATK Ammunition Corporation (the largest producer of rifle bullets), Simmons & Sons Pistol Shootings Inc., Bobcat Firearms Company (manufacturing shotguns), Purdey Machine Works Inc., Eastern Arms Sporting Goods Company (manufacturing handguns) and American Armory Incorporated (producing assault rifles). These companies are responsible for employing nearly 2,000 workers who process approximately 350 million rounds of ammunition each year!
