The present-day courthouse building was finished in 1903 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire in 1892. New London is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 9,585 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Hartford–Worchester Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was organized on July 1, 1635 by Puritans who had emigrated from Great Britain. New London became a state capital in 1785 and was renamed Hartford after President George Washington's first term as president. The name of the town changed back to New London in 1814 when Hartford became the federal capital of the United States. In 1876, Norwich University was chartered and moved to New Haven from Watertown where it had been founded by Reverend Amos Kendall in 1784. From 1865 until its closure in 1918, Norwich Teachers' College operated out of an old greenhouse on Main Street which still stands today (renowned for its delicious pumpkin pies). In addition to being home to some excellent regional art museums such as Norwalk Museum Of American Art (NMAA), Yale University also operates a campus here called Yale-New Haven Open Space which includes woodlands, ponds, gardens and other features connected by footpaths and trails leading through woods that provide beautiful views across Wellesley Hills into downtownNH
