In the year 1784, a group of men from New London, Connecticut began to design and build a new type of telescope. The first telescopes were made with a round mirror that could be turned to look at objects in all directions. This type of telescope was called a “quadrumvirate” because it was built by four gentlemen: Samuel Griffiths, John Herschel, Edward Mason and Nathaniel Parker. In 1754, Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed the first practical telescope, which he called “La Vénus”. In 1827, Isaac Newton invented the calculus which allowed astronomers to calculate the motion of objects in space using simple algebraic equations. This led to new types of telescopes such as those designed by James Clerk Maxwell in 1864–1865 known as “Maxwellian Telescopes”. These Telescopes could resolve objects up to around 100km away and allowed for more accurate observation of celestial bodies than earlier designs. By 1900, however, advances in technology had finally caught up with scientists who had been able to develop better instruments for observing stars and planets at long distances using powerful telescopes such as those built by Edwin Hubble in 1960–1961 known as “Hubble Telescopes”! Today there are many different types of telescopes available that allow users to observe all sorts of phenomena from across the sky including stars down to planet Earth! Some Of these telescopes have even been able to detect extrasolar life!
The first modern scopes were built in the seventeenth century by Dutch Optician Christiaan Huygens. The original Huygens scopes used a single lens and were incredibly limited in their use. They were only able to focus on small objects at a time and required the user to hold the instrument close to their eye. In 1665, English Instrument Maker William Sweetman created the first telescope with two lenses and was much more successful in using it for observing stars and planets. The use of telescopes began to grow further during the eighteenth century as improvements were made to optics and technology. By 1795, all but one of Europe's great astronomical observatories had been built using either optically-based telescopes or reflecting telescopes.
New London was first settled by the Connecticut River Valley people in the 1600s. The town of New London was incorporated on November 15, 1785, and became a part of the United States on January 3, 1801. In 1814, during the Mexican-American War, New London sided with Mexico and was captured by American forces. After Mexico's fall, New London reverted to American rule and continued to grow as an industrial center. Today, New London is a vibrant community with a rich history that has influenced many aspects of American culture.
