However, although Bridgeport was initially successful in developing various industries such as retailing and real estate it struggled financially during Prohibition which led to its bankruptcy in 1933; however this did not prevent it from becoming a major center for Republican Party politics until after President Franklin D. Roosevelt's victory over incumbent Harry S Truman in 1948 made Bridgeport an increasingly Democratic stronghold. Today New London remains an important manufacturing center with many companies located within or nearby its downtown area including Kimberly Clark CFO Solutions Inc., Phillips 66 North America Corporation (Portsmouth), Sturm Ruger & Co., Covidien plc., SABMiller plc., IBM Corp.–Lenovo Group Headquarters LLC and Wolters Kluwer Health Company among others. The downtown area also includes a large number of shops/ boutiques/ restaurants along Broadway between Main Street and Union Avenue as well as several theaters including Regal Cinemas across from Times Square on Broadway near City Hall Plaza; all these businesses helped contribute to significant economic growth during recent decades while still retaining much of their original old-world character complete with brick sidewalks and turnpike architecture
New London is a city in central Connecticut, United States. The population was 25,396 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of Hartford and Westchester County. New London was founded in 1664 by General George Monck as part of the colony of New Netherland. The name is derived from Old English noldun meaning "northern" and ledlæg meaning "town". The town was chartered on March 10, 1735, when it became one of the five towns inHartford Colony. On October 15, 1795, it merged with neighboring Wethersfield to form the new town of New London Township. In 1806, it became a city under the terms of an act of Congress approved July 8 that year which granted its charter as an incorporated city with a right to raise money for internal improvements. On December 13th 1821, it changed its name to Hartford City after becoming one of two cities within Hartford County (the other being Norwich). In 1834, due to financial difficulties caused by cholera pandemic and land speculation during the 1830s-40s (), Hartford City annexed Epping Forest () and removed most trees from its streets and cemeteries (). In 1865 construction began on what would become known as Orange Avenue (), making New London one of only two US cities built primarily around avenues (the other being Chicago). On January 1st 1902, Hartford City merged with Stamford into a single municipality called Stamford-Hartford Township which continued until 1965 when that municipality too merged into Hartford City proper
