New London, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. It was first settled in 1634 by English colonists who named it New London after the royal colony of London. The name "New London" was anglicized to "New Haven" in 1784 and to its present form in 1814 when it became part of the new state of Connecticut. The town's history is intertwined with that of Hartford County. The townsite where New London now stands was first developed as part of the growth around Hartford City during the early 19th century. In 1809, Stamford entrepreneur John Trumbull purchased land on what is now Main Street for $1,000 from Samuel Browning. With this purchase, Trumbull laid out a town plan that would become familiar across much of Connecticut: two main streets running north-south through center city; a Market Square surrounded by commercial buildings; and large lots offered for sale along both sides of Creek Road east-west between Second and Third Streets (now State Street). In 1811, Trumbull sold his share in the town to General Israel Putnam for $10,000 cash and 5 acres (2 hectares) on south side of Main Street. Putnam renamed his creation "Hartford." One year later he sold another piece of property in town to Nicholas Willis for $5 per acre ($60 total). Willis donated land west of State Street also to form Spring Hill Cemetery which still exists today within walking distance from downtown New London! Hartford City rapidly grew around its newly formed port thanks to increased trade with Britain and other parts of North America during this time period. As business opportunities improved throughout 1830s-40s with increased production values associated with maritime transportation - such as steamboats - more people began moving into rural areas adjacent to Hartford City due to new opportunities available there too: including Canaan Valley west-northwest and Windsor Circle southeast. With increasing population density came an increase in prices for goods traded within Hartford City limits which led some residents looking away from what had become their hometown while others found ways to capitalize on these new opportunities while maintaining close ties back home (what we now know as community
