The history of gun security in New London, Connecticut can be traced back to the early 1800s. At that time, the town was a small frontier town located on the border of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Gun violence in the town of New London, Conn. began in 1827 when two British soldiers were shot and killed by local farmers. The shootings continued sporadically until 1864, when a team of Connecticut State Police officers responded to a report of an armed man on the loose. One trooper was fatally wounded and three other officers were injured as they arrived on the scene. The first homicide victim in New London was Samuel Cook, who was gunned down while walking his dog at around 4 p.m. on October 25th, 1865. Cook's death marked the first time that gun violence had impacted the community intentionally. Five days later, a constable named Charles Everson was shot and killed during a patrol in center-oifield after arresting a suspect with an unloaded rifle following a failed robbery attempt at A&P grocery store. The most serious shooting incident to occur in New London occurred on November 3rd, 1867 when Amos Farnsworth opened fire on four employees of J & H White brewery near Main Street and Lancaster Avenue after losing his job over unpaid wages. Farnsworth killed three workers before being fatally shot by state police officer John Fenton moments later. In all, eight people were injured in Farnsworth's rampage including six civilians and one state trooper who died from his wounds five days later at Hartford Hospital. Since then, gun violence has generally been confined to sporadic incidents or targeted killings which have resulted in extensive public outcry and increased security measures for local businesses and individuals
