It is part of the New Haven–Hartford–Easton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's name comes from the first settlement in what is now New London Township on the north bank of the Connecticut River. The first permanent English settlers in what is now New London Township were two families who arrived from Ipswich, Suffolk, in 1639 and 1640. They named their new land "New London" after their home town of Norwich, England. The first settler to homestead in what is now New London Township was John Winthrop (1630-1649). He had been born near Ipswich and came west with his family in 1639 as one of some eighty colonists sponsored by Massachusetts Bay Colony for the purpose of settling new territory along the riverine corridor between Hartford and Wethersfield. The early days of this fertile region were difficult; smallpox killed many people during Captive Prevalence times which lasted until 1795 when vaccination became available through an act of Congress which provided money for its implementation In 1814 Stephen Peck built a sawmill on South Main Street while pastor at First Congregational Church and it continued operations until 1898 when it was destroyed by fire In 1836 Jonas Morse began filling up ponds behind his farmhouse with coal so that he could generate power to run his gristmill This mill still operates as a museum today In 1850 Isaac Sibley opened a grocery store on Park Avenue renamed "Sibley Bros." After several years he sold out to Acker & Haggerty who operated it until 1906 When they merged with other Aldrich stores forming Aldrich Corporation which eventually bought out Sibley Bros., Renamed Alfred Dudden Company Which finally closed down in 1987 . Today there are few physical remnants remaining from these earlier businesses but part of American history can be found imbedded within each individual product . There is also evidence that even before1900 some residents engaged actively in agricultural production such as raising corn and beans on nearby farms

In 1638, the English colony of New London was founded by Sir John Winthrop. The town was named for the then- fledgling English city of London, which had been abandoned by its previous inhabitants in what is now Middlesex County, Virginia. Winthrop and his group of settlers soon realized that this new site would be a valuable resource for salt production and began to explore it extensively. By 1640, they had developed a rudimentary system of government and had erected several buildings including the first courthouse in Connecticut. In 1644, they successfully defended their settlement from an attack by French forces under the command of General Montresor. This event helped establish New London as one of the most important English settlements on the eastern seaboard during the early seventeenth century.
