In 1912-1913, Norwich University established a school in New London which became known as Norwich University College after it moved to Norwalk (now Waterbury). In 1930-1931, John Fenton founded Fenton Farms Inc., an agricultural company that continues today as one of Connecticut's leading producers of vegetables and fruits

The community also produces maize for local feedlots; apples for personal or commercial use; milk from four farms located around town; cheese from several producers including White Rock Creamery,. As well as an annual pumpkin festival which features food vendors from throughout the area as well as artisans making pumpkins out of every imaginable material including straw, leaves etc.; there are also numerous small events held throughout each year that make up what is often called "the little-known history" of New London.
New London was founded by the Connecticut Company in 1636 as a trading post on the southern border of what is now Massachusetts. The company had been organized to purchase land from the Narragansetts and other natives in order to settle English settlers. After years of effort, the company reached an agreement with the Massachusettians in 1641 that allowed for Native American trade with New London but forbade them from settling there permanently. In 1647, New London became one of two settlements in present-day Connecticut when Saybrook was founded by Puritans.
