New London, Connecticut (population: 95,000) is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut. The population was 106,856 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the six towns in Hartford County and one of its oldest. New London was first settled by English colonists in 1623 and became a part of Hartford County on July 1, 1817. The early history of New London is obscured by legend and myth but it is known that the town was founded on the site of a small Indian village called "Nanticoke". The first permanent settlers were several families who arrived from Massachusetts in 1623. They built their homes around what is now Main Street and Prospect Avenue. Because they were new arrivals, they did not have any rights to land or development within the Town limits which limited their impact on early New London society. In 1763, George Washington established military camps in what are now Newtown and West Hartford while he fought at Battle Of Bunker Hill. As these camps developed into permanent garrisons, soldiers began to leave for school or other civilian life back home In Great Britain which caused some tension between British military veterans and their American counterparts living near Boston Common. This tension led to an upsurge in anti-British sentiment among local civilians culminating with a group of militiamen challenging British troops outside Nanticoke Village on July 12th, 1763 during what is known as "The Destruction" incident. Ultimately all participants were arrested and charged with rioting after attempting to burn down the barracks housing British forces! Despite this negative experience, many people decided to settle permanently in New London due to its strategic location midway between Hartford and Danbury Townships providing easy access to both markets as well as personal connections with those located there including wealthy merchants such as Benjamin Franklin from Philadelphia who would invest money into New London's fledgling businesses throughout his career).
