Saybrook Village became one of the most important villages in central Connecticut due to its location next to two major waterways: the Thames River and Long Island Sound. During World War II, Saybrook Village housed several thousand soldiers deployed across central Connecticut during their training before being sent overseas to fight in Europe or Japan. Today many of these soldiers' homes still stand within walking distance of Saybrook Village's comfortable shopping streets and busy public square where they could enjoy good food and interesting culture while learning new skills or catching up on old news while sipping a cold drink inside an outdoor pavilion overlooking Long Island Sound. A few miles away from Saybrook Village sits Lake George which once formed a vital component of New London’s water supply but today it provides recreational opportunities for locals as well as hosting various events throughout each year including duck hunting season (April-May), ice fishing (October-November), boat races (January-February), concerts (March-April) – all enjoyed by people from all walks of life!
