New London, Connecticut is a small town in central Connecticut. It is named for the new London Bridge that was built there in 1824. The town has a population of around 50,000 people and it is the largest municipality in New England. The history of New London goes back to 1664 when English settlers moved from Hartford, Connecticut to what is now New London. The first permanent English settler was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1665. He founded the village of Greenwich and named it after his home country – England. In 1795, the British Raj closed most of India so all Indian residents were deported and their property sold off to Europeans. This left many Indian-owned businesses in British hands which led to some economic instability in the early 1800s. However, by 1810 most Indians had either moved away or died during the American Revolutionary War. In 1824, as part of an effort to improve transportation between Hartford and Springfield (then called Danbury), Governor Daniel Webster began construction on the new London Bridge across Great Sacandaga Creek. The bridge became one of America’s earliest examples of a toll road – it cost $1 per car to cross! Many people believed that this road would lead to more trade and business development in downtown New London but this did not happen; traffic simply increased because cars could travel faster downriver than on foot or wagon! The original town hall was located at what is now Meeting House Square; it served as a meeting place for both local government officials and travelers seeking crossings over the creek at that location. In 1830, George Washington & His family stopped at what is now Rupert’s Tavern for dinner before continuing on their journey northward through upstate New York. At that time Rupert’s Tavern was also known as “the White House Inn” because President Washington had stayed there several times while on official visits throughout his presidency! In 1847 Congress passed an act authorizing Mayor Samuel Gridley Jr., with help from Colonel Nicholas Biddle, to create a township within city limits due largely to concerns about crime rates near downtown Hartford caused by uncheckedimmigration into Hartford from outlying areas such as Danbury and Windsor (then known as Waterford). On July 1st of that year, New London became one entity with its own elected government under Gridley’s leadership – something which would remain an integral part of municipal life until 1959! By 1860 only 10% Of inhabitants lived inside city limits; much like today! Due largely to industrial growth along River Road during this time period (such as foundry production), much land within present-day NewLondon boundaries was undeveloped during much of this time frame unfortunately leading some locals (& developers)to believe that “Londonderry Central Park” should have been developed instead! Alas not… !! 😦 . . . . . . . 📧

Some interesting facts about nearby towns include Putnam Valley having over 200 miles (322 km) worth of hiking trails including sections leading into Canaan National Wildlife Refuge which offers land managed by Yale University;[2] Derby had 1 grocery store whenHartford started growing large enough to support another store;[3] Ledyard had a small school whenHartford started growing large enough to support another school;[4][5] Weston had no industry whenHartford started growing large enough to support another industry;[6][7][8][9] Westfield had 2 stores whenHartford started growing large enough to support 3 stores,[10] while Easton only had 1 store whenHartford started growing large enough to support 2 stores.[11][12]

New London was chartered in 1664 as a town by the English colonists. The original name of the town was Newtown, but it was changed to New London because of its location on the Connecticut River.
