The town is located on the southern border of Hartford and lies within the New London-Windsor School District. It is also home to the New London Naval Shipyard, which produces warships and submarines. The first permanent settler in what would become New London was Nicholas Needham in 1636. In 1765, John Purdy arrived with his family from England and started a grist mill on the north bank of the river that now forms part of town center. By 1800, there were over 25 businesses operating in NewLondontown centre alone! The early settlement of this area was based on agriculture with a few families settling here for grazing land or shipping goods downriver to Boston through the then new Waterford Channel Tunnel. But by 1825 mills had sprung up all around town – Bethesda Mill being one of earliest – and it became clear that transportation would be an important factor in guiding development hereabouts! In 1831, Samuel Morse opened the first post office in what would become New London; just one year later he began regular mail service between Hartford and Baltimore! And so began an era of great progress for this small community as well as for America itself – during which time our townsfolk developed not only their own industries but also founded other local banks and churches…the list goes on! It wasn’t until after World War II that things really started to change for both locals and newcomers when many factories closed down following wartime economic recession, leaving little hope of revival until recent times! And yet despite these challenges (and some very tough times) things have slowly but surely been adapting back into their rightful place as one of high-quality small communities throughout Connecticut’s history!!!
