New London, Connecticut is a town in southern Connecticut. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. The town is named for New London, England. The first Europeans to visit what is now New London were fishermen from Newfoundland and Labrador trying to find a new route to the Indies. They discovered land that would be their home for many years. In 1624, John Smith sailed into what is now New London Bay and founded the town on his own land in present-day Hartford County. With this settlement came a new era of growth for the community as farmers began to settle here and businesses flourished. In 1814, when Hartford County was split into northern and southern districts, New London became part of northern district. This change didn’t have any affect on thetown’s growth though – by 1850 it had reached its current size with 2,500 residents living within its borders. As economic opportunities increased in northwestern Connecticut during the late 19th century, so did interest in moving to New London. By 1890, over 100 people had moved here and started businesses such as grocery stores, banks, post offices and factories. During World War I (1914-18), much of northeastern Connecticut was destroyed by fire which caused millions of dollars in damage across southeastern CT; however no loss of life occurred in NewLondon thank goodness! While some aspects of life remain unchanged since then (like Monday night baseball games), most everyday activities have evolved over time like getting married or having kids! New London, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 33,391 at the 2010 census. The town is named for the then-new market place of New London on the banks of the Connecticut River. The first permanent settler in what would become New London was Nicholas Sudbury in 1636. He and his family moved from Ipswich, Massachusetts to a tract of land east of where Hartford now stands. In 1675, Increase Mather purchased 2/3rds of all the lots between the river and what is now Main Street in New London from Nicholas Sudbury. The purchase increased Mather's title to ownership of most of what became known as "Old New London". An act passed by the General Court dated December 12, 1701 directed that "the several cities and boroughs within this colony" be divided into wards or precincts; that each ward be governed by an elected board; that no manorial farmer should hold more than one pollock field per acre; and that every freeholder had two vote in any court open to him. This act also provided for election day to be November 3 instead of March 4 due to reasons cited including expense associated with traveling to court on such days and concerns about sympathetic jurors being able to influence proceedings on behalf of their friends or enemies. On July 1st 1705, New London became part ofHartford Colony when it merged with other towns within Hartford County (in addition to Saybrook) under a new government called "The Colony." The new government ordered all male freeholders over 21 years old who owned real estate within limits prescribed by its charter (in those days there were only three). These limits included: an area bounded by Thames Street on the north side; First Street on the east side; State Road 5A (now Highways 20 and 64) running south from Thames Street; and Whitehall Square on both sides of State Road 5A. In 1737 John Dunster founded Derby Mills just northeast of present-day downtown NEW LONDON while still living in Southold Village – today's North Derby Avenue – he continued operations even after moving his business sunsetting mills out onto Queen's Highway near present-day Bridgeport later that year because he could not find enough people willing or able to work there full time during good times when goods were coming downriver during bad times like these! Dunster was so successful he started up another factory nearby – Derby Mills #2 – which continued until 1856 when it burned down due to an accident! As you can see Derby Mills has been around since long before anyone really thought about doing anything about it!
