In 1814 an act were passed providing for the organization of schools in New London as part of the Education Act of 1813; this act also authorized legislation creating wards within New London City Hall precinct system that would provide representation to certain sections or districts within our municipal boundaries when voting for members to serve on school committees or other positions with respect to education in our city government In 1830 John Wesley preached his first sermon from Old Bridge Church on Thames Avenue NW; this event marked Newark's Anglican church establishment The first public school opened in NL on November 7th 1831 inside the building located at 203 Thames Ave NW under the directionof Mr David Whitehead On December 12th 1840 Nathaniel Hawthorne attended an auction held by Elisha Cook Jr., proprietor of Cook’s Ferry Landing waterfront tavern where he won title to 4 acres adjoining Harbor View LaneNW just south of present day Hackensack River . Hawthorne may have walked over from his home along Jetty Point Rd NW adjacent to present day Bayonne Bridge Manhattan Beach NJ because he lesseeered lot number 8 across from house number 6 opposite Erastus Saunders dockage area . On January 10th 1841Hawthorne delivered a prayer meeting before Delaware Baptist Society Meeting House titled “A Memorial Prayer Mournful For Our dead In Christ Jesus” lasting until midnight AEST HEAVILY attended including ladies Mrs Amelia Bloomfield & Miss Lucretia Denton then went into their house next door continuing prayers until morning without interruption He also blessed property including lots 3 thru 5 opposite Harmon Bank building behind warehouse/garage lot Further meetings were held during early 1840’s at different locations but final organizational meeting took place March 25th 1841 when Reverend Elijah Morse presided over meeting adjourned with prayer that God would open hearts among us all
