In the early 1800s, New Haven was a small town in central Connecticut. It was home to many important businesses and people. One of these businesses was the Hartford Armory, which produced firearms for the American Revolution. The Hartford Armory also made cases for handguns. The first handguns were invented in 1792 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. These handguns were called “pistols” because they fired pistols instead of shot guns like other rifles and shotguns did. Pistol cases were designed to protect these pistols from being lost or damaged during transport or storage. Pistols continued to be produced at the Hartford Armory until 1847, when it closed its doors due to financial difficulties. However, case production continued at various other gunsmiths throughout America until 1865, when all handgun production ceased due to Union military occupation of America.

There is a long and varied history of handguns in the city of New Haven, Conn. In 1837, New Haven Mayor John Winthrop proposed that the city establish a police department to Combat Crime. The first officers were hired in 1838 and the first gun law was passed in 1840. In 1847, the first municipal rifle club was founded in New Haven and soon afterwards pistols began being imported into the city from out of state. In 1865, the first magazine handgun law was passed in Connecticut. This ordinance regulated pistol magazines to possess no more than 25 rounds per month with a maximum cap of 100 rounds per year. It also introduced registration requirements for handguns and required anyone who possessed a handgun within city limits to register it with the police department within 24 hours after acquisition or shipment. In 1908, prohibitionist candidate Grover Cleveland ran for president on an anti-gun platform which included calls for repeal of all handgun laws nationwide as well as bans on both open carry and concealed carry outside of specific zones designated by the municipality. During his campaign, Cleveland visited New Haven several times where he distributed literature opposing such measures statewide. On election day, he handdelivered petitions signed by numerous citizens against any new gun regulations statewide to various campaign workers throughout the state capital – including many individuals working at City Hall – effectively defeating any efforts to pass such legislation during his term as President (although some bills did make it through). Following Cleveland’s presidency, many states – most notably California – enacted similar gun control measures which ultimately led to America’s “Great American Gun War” between 1911-1913 which saw numerous mass shootings across multiple cities across America involving automatic firearms (the last time this occurred occurring in Newtown, Conn., just three years later). The area that would become New Haven was first settled by Indians in the early seventeenth century. By 1701, there were over 200 families living in what is now New Haven Township. In 1764, newVillage Incorporation was chartered to provide for development within what is now northcentral Hartford County on land that had been sold by Sir Ferdinando Gifford to Joseph Whitehead and his brother Benjamin for $5 per acre (1/4 mile). With this charter came an obligation to build churches and schools within 10 years; such promises were not fulfilled until after Indian Removal Act of 1828 forced all permanent European-American settlement out of Connecticut Valley region during this period known as “the Great Migration” or “the Discharge” (Folsom & Gunn pgs 9-10). In 1795–1796 Judge Edward Livingston organized a committee to purchase land east of townline with some hopes that he might establish a village there but this idea never took off due to lack of interest from locals or investors (Folsom & Gunn pg 111). In 1802–1803 Columbo donated 640 acres (2 km²) northwest of town line for school purposes only – it wasn’t until 1835 when Congress authorized issuance of town bonds which funded construction (Folsom & Gunn pg 111). A year later on October 11th trustees laid out much-needed streetscape plans which included a 400 ft long main street running northeast from corner lot #1 at Water Street towards State Street with lots numbered 1 through 12 just east side thereof (ibid.). This street continued into present day Northside Drive although it was shortened considerably during construction due primarily to lack space available along Northside Road itself rather then building another main street across town line! The cornerstone for First Congregational Church was laid on November 5th 1837 just south sideonal road between Broadway and Park Streets intersection following ground previously broken by Rev George Eliot who served as church pastor starting December 25th 1830 until May 1865) before moving upstairs upcurrent Main Street thenceforth becoming Eliot Avenue today crossing Broadway near corner Post office where First Congregational also building once stood.)
