New Britain is a town in the U.S. state of Connecticut. The population was 26,496 at the 2010 census, up from 24,822 in 2000 and 22,527 in 1990. It is part of the Hartford-West Hartford-East Haven metropolitan area. New Britain was first settled by English colonists in 1638 as an agricultural trading post on the junction of two Native American trails called the Mystic and Quinebaug rivers. The town was named for New England's second land grant to a European settler, Sir John Callender, who founded what became Norwich in 1644 along with other towns within the colony of Connecticut. In 1784, when Connecticut became a state, New Britain was merged intoHartford County as one of its eight original townships. The following year it became one of four townships located within Hartford City limits (the others being Northington, Easton and Wethersfield). In 1836–37 it annexe ed Westville as part of its growth; however this annexation did not take place until after that city's incorporation into Hartford City Limits several years later. The present day settlement began to take shape around 1820 when new settlers arrived from Massachusetts lured by offers for fertile land grants near Boston due to an expanding commercial trade between Great Britain and America through those colonies during that period known as "The Gilded Age." By 1830 there were over 100 people living in NewBritain; by 1850 there were just 30 left and only 10 families remaining today due largely to declines in agricultural production throughout much of Yankee America during that time period exacerbated by technological advances such as railroad construction which made possible mass market transportation across vast distances without dependence on horse or wagon transportation
