Naugatuck, Connecticut began as a small settlement in the early 1600s. The area now known as Naugatuck was first settled by Native Americans, who named it after the river that ran through it. By 1700, the area had become a part of England. In 1764, Naugatuck became part of Connecticut and was renamed Greenfield. In 1814, Greenfield was merged with other towns in what is now Hartford County to form the city of Hartford.

It is part of the New Britain–Hartford–Bridgeport Combined Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Naugatuck was Nicholas Stoddard in 1686 and the town was chartered on February 14, 1714. The original name for Naugatuck was "Norwich". A post office called Naugatuck had been established in 1825, and remained in operation until it closed in 1903. The town has since been renamed numerous times including: NaugatUCK (1903), NARGATUCK (1918), NEAGATUCK (1959), NBHARTFORD-HARTFORD-BRIDGEPORT COUNCIL WARD 3 (1996), and NHARTFORD-WEST HARTFORD-BETHESDA COUNTY GOVERNMENT AREA CODE 112811 (2010). The area now known as Naugatuck became part of Hartford County when it gained self-government under the Massachusetts Constitution on April 14, 1821. towns within Hartford County were given charters to provide for their own government and education; however, due to population growth within Hartford County and lack of land to house all these charter towns’ residents, many decided to move away from Hartford County altogether and establish themselves elsewhere. A few such places included Norwich, Watertown/Northwich/amherst/Easton/New London/West Haven etc.; however all but Norwich eventually lost their charters or failed to gain new ones after disagreements with county officials over taxation rates which they felt were excessive. In 1826 Englishman John Hathaway purchased 2 lots at present day Main Street & Academy Road for $800 dollars believing that he would find an early American settlement hereabouts if given enough time; accordingly Hathaway named his new town “Hartford” after himself. However this too proved unsuccessful so he changed his mind about the name two years later when he discovered that other settlers also wished to call their new community “Hartford”; again changing it back to its original name of “Naugatuck” after some searching through old records he found that only one person had already adopted this spelling – his namesake Nicholas Stoddard – though others may have taken it from nearby New London where some stores situated along what is now Main Street still bear this name today! By 1840 there must have been at least twenty families living here officially under “Naragatuck” names even though most likely only a handful truly resided therein during any particular calendar year! In fact by 1860 only 4 families still lived there officially under that same name while another 6 had moved away since then! By 1870 only 1 family still resided there formally while 5 more had either left or merged into other localities! Finally by 1880 just 2 households continued using “Naragatucker” surnames despite total losses among those who originally used them! With each passing year more residents gave up hope of ever settling here permanently before finally giving up efforts altogether around 1900 following increasing prices for land throughout the state as well as meeting stiff competition from similar settlements established outside of our small corner of Connecticut! Today much has changed since 1800 including increased taxes which continue to be a mainstay against which many residents attempt unsuccessfully to compete every year no matter how much money they may bring in!!! We are blessed with endless opportunities for economic growth yet we remain continuously struggling financially….. anything else could easily lead us down a path less traveled but unfortunately history always repeats itself!!
