Naugatuck is a town in central Connecticut, United States. The population was 9,541 at the 2010 census. Naugatuck is part of the New Britain–Hartford-West Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Naugatuck was Nicholas Low and his family in 1664. The town was named for the Nassau River which flows through it. The town began as a small farming community with a few homes and barns. By 1830, Naugatuck had a school, two churches,and over 100 businesses including stores, hotels and restaurants. In 1835, President Andrew Jackson sent troops to quash an uprising in neighboring Saybrook (now Southbury). When the news reached Naugatuck residents they quickly erected a militia to protect their town from possible looting by federal troops. This event is considered to be the beginning of Naugatuck's history as an open-air market place for goods and services that continues today." In 1860, when Connecticut became a state, NaugatUCK passed through one of its most significant moments when it voted to become its own incorporated city within just five years! In 1870–71 Haverhill College opened its doors here after being founded by Reverend Nathaniel Eaton on Indian land east of Hartford (later absorbed into Yale University). That same year saw construction begin on what would eventually become downtown Naugatuck – then known simply as "The Square" – thanks largely to donations from entrepreneur Horatio Alger Jr., who named it after himself and his hometown of Norwich (Norfolk County).[1] After years of growth and development that included much popularized music performance here (e.g., Ray Charles & The Shirelles), downtown finally received its name change in 1977: "Naugatucker."[2] Haverhill College closed its doors in 2002 but has been reborn as Hartnell University School Of Business And Economics which offers undergraduate coursework across three campuses in London CT; West Hartford; Plainville; Danbury; North Branford; Waterbury; Shelton ; White Lake NY.; Coburn NY.; Ithaca NY.; Auburn Hills MI.. Hartnell also offers graduate level courses such as Master’s degree programs in business administration and marketing or real estate management
