On January 1, 1802, Plymouth Rock resident James Fenton purchased 2 acres of land at present day Main Street and Frontage Road for £10 carte blanche from Nicholas Nearing—the only purchase made by Fenton during his lifetime as proprietor of this tract of land which later became known as "Fenton's Corner". In 1818 Governor Elbridge Gerry issued a proclamation creating eleven townships within Hartford County: seven north of Norwalk and four east of Westport; these were organized into eight districts: Northampton district included parts of Bridgeport and Newtown; East Windsor district included most of Milford Haven; Middletown district included Saybrook; Norwich district included Groton; Upton district included Eastonville; Stamford district included Southold and references are not found to other towns located within this newly createdDistrict boundaries until 1861 when it was reorganized into three additional districts—Norwich District including Saybrook again, Stamford District including Southold again but also reference to Wethersfield (thenliable only to Stratford) duenorthwest thereof,[14] while Upton District remained unorganized[15]. On December 20th 1830 Revd Amos Stiles preached at Trinity Church on Main Street about baptismal regeneration which he called "the conversion experience" or "the conferring upon us of grace." He announced that immersion would soon be discontinued because people could then receive salvation through reading without immersion which would lead them away from God's program for their lives. Soon afterward Revd Amos Stiles baptized seventy persons just outside the church door using cold water brought up from Great Falls Pond where Reverend Ebenezer Brown had been baptizing earlier that day.[16] A few months later Reverend Amos Stiles began teaching religious education classes inside Trinity Church while members helped him build a schoolhouse on Meeting House Lane between Walnut Hill Avenue and Hawkins Avenue near wherepresent-day Elmira High School stands today. 1 October 1831 saw another important event when Revd Amos Stiles married Rebecca Morrissey outside Trinity Church.[17][18] The couple moved into an apartment above Greenough & Park Streets beginning with four rooms rented for $5 per month which they shared with twelve other neighbors before purchasing an entire block at 562 Main Street for $50 per year subsequenty becoming proprietors owning more than one hundred acres[19][20]. In 1840 3 men Starter bought 160 acres adjacentto present day downtown Naugatuck for $6 per acre – making them owners/possessors totalof nearly 4 square miles . . . further development took place after starter’s death with several homes being built along Broad Brook Road running thru downtown Raquelstown before reaching its current location . . .
