Naugatuck, Connecticut is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford–Worcester–New Haven metropolitan area. Naugatuck was first settled in 1635 by John Naugatuck and his wife Anne Weymouth. The name comes from the Anacondas that live there and were once hunted for their meat. The first settler to purchase land in what would become Naugatuck was Captain Edward Winslow in 1638. In 1814, Colonel Cyrus Putnam organized a company of Volunteers to resist British occupation during the War of 1812. Colonel Putnam donated land near Naugatuck for military use and named it Putnam's Farm after himself. Naugatuck began trading with other towns along the Long Island Sound in 1715 when they built fortifications on high ground overlookinglying settlements on both sides of the sound (now known as Saybrook and Southold). By 1800, Naugatuck had a store, schoolhouse, blacksmith shop and two churches: one Lutheran and one Baptist. By 1830, it had around 100 residents while Saybrook had over 200 people and Southold over 300 people. In 1814-1815, Battle of Long Island took place as part of the War of 1812 between Great Britain and America; 10% of all Americans served in this conflict (the largest number ever volunteered). For many years after this event local farmers raised corn for export to Great Britain; however with faster transportation technologies such as railroads developed during the late 19th century exports stopped completely until after World War I when new markets opened up due to scientific advances made by American entrepreneurs such as Henry Ford Sr., Jules Verne etc.; also Prohibition started following repeal of chattel slavery starting in 1865 changed opportunities for agriculture which led to increased demand for goods exported from America; making efficient transportation systems like railways possible which allowed larger quantities items like foodstuffs to be transported cheaply all over North America thus stimulating economic growth throughout much of Canada/Mexico etc.; finally beginning mass production techniques including plastics followed by automobiles etc., ending world hunger (albeit slowly) through development feeding surpluses back into agriculture leading to denser populations across much ofNorthAmerica today’

Naugatuck was firstnamed after the Naugatuck River. The name originated from the tribe of Naugatucks who lived in and around the river until the early 1800s. The town began to grow as a result of its location on a key trading route between New York City and Hartford, Conn. Naugatuck soon became an important center for manufacturing, with mills producing everything from textiles to shoes to cannons. By 1851, Naugatuck had reached its peak population and commercial activity, thanks in part to its location at the crossroads of two major routes linking New England and Pennsylvania. However, by 1875, local mills had been shuttered due to competition from larger manufacturers in neighboring towns such as Stamford and Norwalk.
