Naugatuck, Connecticut is home to one of the most significant firearm clothing collections in the United States. This center for firearms history and research has more than 30,000 firearms items from pre-1901 through today. The collection is a significant source of information for researchers and shooters alike. The firstguns enthusiasts in Naugatuck had to inventive minds looking to find ways to protect their firearms. In 1868, J. H. Barber patented a design for military pistol gloves that greatly increased safety when handling pistols. These gloves were eventually adopted by the Union Army as part of their field uniform M1911 pistol grip holster system (see photograph). In 1901, John Purdy patented an improved version of his barber-patented pistol grip holster design that became known as the "Purdy Holster." The holster was designed specifically for use with .22 caliber shotguns and rifle barrels over .410 inches in length (6 inches or 15 cm). This innovative design allowed shotgun owners and outdoorsmen access to their shotguns while wearing civilian clothing without having to remove their handguns from the waistband of their pants or other clothing layers (see photograph). It was also this same year that the Naugatuck Armory began production of these handguns with barrel lengths up to 18 inches (45 cm) in order to meet new American demand for larger calibers of firearms. During World War II, much interest was focused on artillery weapons delivery systems such as mortars and machine guns which required large caliber ammunition carriers that could be carried either on horseback or on trucks/jeeps transportable ammunition magazines called "cratered" munitions carriers which could hold up to 100 rounds per magazine(s)). One such development was John Browning's New Model 1911 handgun chambered in 9mm Parabellum which became available after World War II as an assault rifle variant known as the AR-15 platform Rifle (.223 Remington/7mm Remington Magnum), Pistol (.357 SIG/.38 Super Hornet), and Shotgun (.410 Winchester/.22LR) sniper rifles with detachable box magazines carrying up to 20 rounds each (see photographs). The popularity of firearm carry among law enforcement officers across America led gun manufacturers like Colt Arms Company, Ruger Firearms Company, Savage Arms Corporation, Dunlop Ammunition Company Ltd., Smith & Wesson Manufacturing Co., Springfield Armory Corp., Remington Arms Company Inc., S&W plc., Beretta AG amongst others - including revolvers made by Colt –to develop additional automatic handgun models chambered in different calibers specifically designed for police service purposes such as 9mm Luger®, 7 mm Mauser®, 5 inch barrel Python® revolver chambered in 40 S&W Long®, 10 mm Auto Mag® revolver chambered in 5.56 NATO®, 12 ga./50 ga./300 Win Mag® rimfire rifle models designated "pistol cops," ".mil surplus," etc.). With advances in technology came advancements in firearm safety; henceforth more people began choosing concealed carry instead of open carry whenever possible ().

Naugatuck is a town in Connecticut, United States. The population was 15,471 at the 2010 census. It is the largest town in New England and second-largest town in Connecticut behind Stamford. Naugatuck is located on the southern shore of Long Island Sound, east of Norwich and west of Hartford. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Naugatuck in 1635 by ship from Plymouth Colony. George Wyckoff and his brother Daniel founded the town on October 14, 1714 as part of a large land grant to Barton Peirce from John Woolley. The new town was named for Nathaniel Naugatuck (1619–1681), an early settler who purchased a tract of land two miles north of present day Naugatuck and built a house thereon which he called "Nathaniel's Fort." On May 12, 1777, during the American Revolutionary War, Militia Captain Moses Mitchel ordered his men to open fire upon a British naval vessel anchored off Long Island Sound while its cannons were being reloaded; they fired thirteen rounds without causing injury or damage. This incident became known as "Mitchel's Massacre." In 1805, Daniel Webster bought 1/4 acre (0.20 km2) of land adjoining that owned by Amos Kendall nearpresent day Saybrook Road and Nottingham Avenue for $1USD. Webster soon began developing this property into one of Naugatuck's most important intersections with Saybrook Road running northwest – southeast – northwest and southwesterly along present day Nottingham Avenue carrying Main Street over what are now Elmira Boulevard (Newport County Route 5), Saybrook Road continuing northeast along present day Saybrook Road to meet Hudson River atSaybrook Inn on Roundabout Lane west of downtown today before turning southwest via Elmira Boulevard back into New Haven County through modern-day Naugatuck towards White Sands Missile Range just past Our Lady Of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church today’s junction with Old Bridge Rd SE & CR 244 NW Governor John Winthrop announced plans for the townsite on February 24th 1738 when he laid out portions 4 acres square situated between Newark Turnpike to the eastward lying due North (now corner Rte 2&3) thence due South (now corner Elmira Blvd.) thence easterly along said turnpike until it met water aforesaid; so far as I know no one ever saw him do it...I should further say that I have been told by several people who were there then that there never was any such laying out done but only talk about it because some purpose or other wanted mentioned therein secrecy having been kept up since thenvelveteen hundred fifty nine years ago

Naugatuck was a town in Tolland County, Connecticut. It is now part of the Springfield, Massachusetts metropolitan area. The population was 5,568 at the 2010 census. Naugatuck's first settler was Nicholas Soares in 1639 and its first house was built by him on what is now Main Street. In 1764, Johnathon Higginson founded the town of Naugatuck as an agricultural community to support his family farmstead near what is now Unionville Road. Naugatuck became a borough in 1854 and then a town in 1869. The village of Naugatuck proper merged into the town on May 1, 1907; however, it continued to be governed by aldermen until 1959 when it became part of the new town of Springfield. On July 1, 1984, Naugatuck became one of four towns within the new New London Municipal District which covers most of western Tolland County. On January 1st 2006 all but 2 (the old library) buildings within the old borough were razed and replaced with development approved for that year included: housing developments for senior citizens adjacent to municipal park/community center; healthcare facilities including a primary care physician office; retail stores and restaurants inside municipal limits; 3 small high schools serving students from grades 9-12 inside municipally owned properties along with 2 summer colleges for students age 21 or older providing vocational training The following are excerpts from "Nexeconnecticut History" by Barbara Latham: "In 1639 Nicholas Soares set out from Hartford Colony with 400 acres (16 km2) grant to found a settlement at Nowhere Neck on Long Island Sound." Soares' land passed through many hands before it was sold off in 1662 to Samuel Whitehead who put it into cultivation as his own property called Westport Manor alias Mystic Valley Farmstead thenceforward known as Westport Village." Whitehead's son John Whitehead donated additional land southeastward extending two miles (3 km) beyond where he had settled founding Westport Landing which would become Chelsea Proper later renamed Chelsea Town." After years of growth and progress westward over East Swamp Pond towards Stamford Bridge - due primarily to white enterprise - Chelsea proper arrived at its current location east-northeast cornerof present day Harrison Avenue between Main Street & Prospect Avenue on October 17th 1800 when General James Callender laid out Lots Nos 10 & 11 having intentions "...to make an open market place". But this ended up being only an advertisement for Callender's mill complex soon after completed due mainly because Spencer Coles took over business operations incorporating himself under that name gracing prospectus dated November 6th 1800...while Southwark Mill actually started operation February 12th 1801 just east side Main St., lot No 7"...still enjoying legal privileges asChelsea Township until transfer came about thru Act Of March 4th 1861 thru Elisha Stevens (Mayor), Nathan Goff( recorder), Elijah Higginbotham( Surveyor)...the only change coming about thru succession plan laid outby Ebenezer Stronger detailed hereinbelow...so finally we arrive today at our current location just northeast corner Harrison Ave., between Main St.#1& Prospect Ave.#2,... concurrent with erection of building #5 next door..."
Naugatuck, Connecticut was first settled by the Dutch in 1624. The town was named after the Naugatuck River which flows through it. It became a part of Watertown, Massachusetts in 1820 and then Hartford, Connecticut in 1828. In 1864, Naugatuck became a part of the newly created Hartford County and remains so to this day. The population of Naugatuck reached 10,000 in 1925 and has since decreased slightly to 7,500 today.
