Naugatuck was founded in 1764 by General Israel Putnam and Major John Rowe as a trading post on the western bank of the River Thames. Naugatuck became an incorporated town on February 20, 1872. The community was named after Colonel Nathaniel NaugatUCK (1723-1794), who served as a colonel in George Washington's army and afterward represented Hartford County in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1775 to 1777 and 1779 to 1783. Colonel NaugatUCK married Katherine Hepburn and had five children: two daughters and three sons; one son died young. In addition to their farming activities, Colonel NaugatUCK also developed plying trade with produce from his farm lands along what is now Main Street in present day Naugatuck. He also built several contributing buildings including a Masonic Lodge (now meeting hall) located on Meeting House Hill overlooking downtown; he donated land for creation of Yale University's Old Campus; he erected a public house called The Gilded Cage which still stands today on Front Street; he funded building of local hospitals including Eastern State Hospital (noworts’ Hospital) and Norwich Naval Hospital;; Colleague Nathan Hawley endowed first collegiate gymnasium in America at Yale University; Colleague Samuel Hopkins endowed second college gymnasium at Brown University.; As early as 1800s there were attempts by settlers to establish villages or towns near where they lived but these proposals were generally rejected because of lack of water power or other features available for settlement.' Naugatuck, Connecticut is a town in the United States of America. The population was 8,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford, CT Metropolitan Statistical Area. Naugatuck first appeared on maps in 1664 as Naughateck and its original name may be derived from an Indian word meaning "northern point." In 1714, George Washington visited Naugatuck and reported that it was an "excellent place" where he would like to live when he became President of the United States. The first European to visit Naugatuck was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524 when he mapped out what is now eastern Connecticut. In 1835, Congress voted to add Naugatuck to Hartford County and form the new town ofHartfordville. The first school in Naugatuck opened in 1815 and classes were held intermittently until 1826 due to lack of funds. A subscription school opened in 1836 which remained operational until 1861 due to financial difficulties caused by the American Civil War. A day school began operation in 1850 and continued until 1915; this institution also served as a base for military training for local troops during World War I and World War II. Beginning in 1865, agricultural schools were established within the town limits offering instruction in horticulture, poultry production, dairy science, and other related subjects. In 1895–96 a library was founded with money contributed by members of the community; this institution remains active today with a library collection totaling more than 215 books including rare manuscripts and prints dating back more than two hundred years! In 1902–03 a women’s suffrage referendum resulted in passage of a bill establishing female voting rights within Connecticut; this event helped bring about social change within the town while also providing impetus for further development both inside and outside of town limits over time! On July 1st 1904 (the date that women gained full citizenship within Connecticut), citizens voted 3-2 to demolish all but one old courthouse which stood on land once used for agriculture; this project ultimately led to increased economic activity throughouttown thanks largely to increased access to transportation following construction of Interstate 95!
