Milford, Connecticut is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 24,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-West Hartford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of the town comes from English Milford meaning 'a small village'. The first Europeans to visit what is now Milford were surveyors working for Colonel John Smith in 1764-5 who named it after his home town of Milford on the River Test in England. When General Jonathan Trumbull took over command of American forces during the American Revolutionary War, he ordered all buildings and property within six miles (10 km) of New York City to be burned as an example to other rebels. This order resulted in many people fleeing northward into Canada where they founded various communities including North Royalton and Derbyville in Vermont before finally settling in what is now Milford. In 1814-15 Ebenezer Dodge built a sawmill on Mill Pond which became one of the earliest commercial mills in this area and continued until 1862 when it converted to a grist mill. In 1827 John Morse established a woolen manufacturing plant here that continues today as Morse Bros Incorporated with over 100 employees across 11 plants across four states. One notable event that occurred during this time was when Amos Adams set up shop here as an agricultural improver and began making haystacks out of logs so that he could sell them to farmers for use on their farms instead of using straw or other materials common at that time. During World War II, memberships dues from local businesses helped support military spending by providing uniforms and other goods needed by soldiers stationed throughout America; also, services such as lawn care were provided by locals who had contracts with local servicemen/womenfolk once they reached military service ended). On October 4th 1945, President Harry S Truman declared war on Japan following their attack on Pearl Harbor two weeks earlier. A week later, Roosevelt delivered his speech "We Shall Overcome" which helped rally America around its moral obligation to help restore democracy worldwide after years of darkness following World War I.
