Partially because of this investment by Trumbull and Phelps, Falls Bridge was built over parts of both rivers in 1836 becoming one of only two bridges across those rivers still extant today (the other being Pratt's Arch bridge over Potomac Creek). Milford is a town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 20,419 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hartford-West Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Milford were two Dutchmen, Hendrick Kieft and Jan Swaap, on July 11, 1614. They named the village after their friend and fellow Dutchman who had also been to England that year - Colonel John Milford. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1635 when Edmund Andros and his family came from Massachusetts as part of an effort by General John Mason to settle New England. During the 17th century many Puritans moved into Milford from Rhode Island due to religious persecution there; these farmers laid out around three square miles (8 km2) of land near the present day intersection of Main Street and North Avenue in what is now downtown Milford. In 1777 during the Revolutionary War, George Washington's army passed through town on its march up the Connecticut River and artillery batteries lined both routes leading into New York City; one battery landed at present day Fort Edward on North Avenue while another manned Battery Park Heights across from Mercy Hospital in what is now White Plains Road. On February 14th President George Washington delivered his inaugural address from Federal Hall in this town after coming downriver from Trenton via Bridgeport Landing just east of where today’s I-95 exits off Route 9 southbound onto Interstate 95 westbound).
