Milford is a borough in Hartford, Connecticut, United States. The population was 20,471 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in Hartford and is one of only two rural municipalities in the state. Milford was first settled by English colonists in 1684. The town acquired its present name from Major General Winthrop Milord (1648-1712), who fought against Native Americans on Long Island and later became an American Revolutionary War hero. A smallpox epidemic that struck the community in 1719 caused many to emigrate to New York City or Philadelphia, but most of the original families returned to Milford after it was fully recovered. In 1814, Mayor Burt Ward purchased 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land south of town for $5 per acre ($10 per square kilometer). This site became known as Ward's Hill and remains one of the most important commercial and social centers in early Hartford Township. The first stores opened in Milford on Great North Road between what are now Main Street and Grove Street on December 1, 1800; these were run by local farmers with goods brought overland from Norwich via Route 9A. By 1802 there were ten stores open within a radius of three miles (4 km) aroundtown; all but one were operated by farmers themselves or their family members. One store opened by Samuel Morse located just east of current State Street along what is now Union Avenue; this store was later moved to Main Street across from Mount Hope Cemetery where it still operates today as Morse's Incorporated Store LLC. In 1806 John Dickinson proposed that Connecticut be admitted into the Union as a free state – this proposal led to increased development near downtown Milford because citizens wanted more space for themselves within which to live and work without fear of militia raids or attacks from neighboring communities such as Stamford or Windsor Heights. On October 14, 1824, when President George Washington delivered his inaugural address outside Trinity Church on Park Row he said: "This new government will exist forevermore…It must be conceived not merely as an armory for our own defense but also as a preventive measure against future insurrections." As part of this speech he called for "…a public road leading through this district [to points north] …for carrying provisions and munitions past military posts" – these roads would eventually become part of Routes 9A/9W which connected Norwich with Hartford proper while also providing access to other farming areas westofthe city limits including Enfield and Manchester

It is the smallest of the Twelve Towns in Hartford County and it is also the least populous town in the county by population. The first settlement in Milford was made on December 20, 1664, when John Smith and his family set off from Windsor, England for what would be their new home in North America. They arrived at Newtown (now part of Milford) on December 26th and founded a small community there. In 1722, our first sawmill was constructed here. The mills were among the most important economic engines that helped support this burgeoning community during its early years. In 1814-1815, two churches were built here: First Presbyterian Church (now St. John’s Episcopal) and Second Presbyterian Church (later First Congregational). In 1835-1836 two more churches were built: Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church and Holy Redeemer Protestant church. At that time Milford had a total population of just under 500 people; today it has only about 150 inhabitants due to declining agricultural production and an increase in suburban housing development nearby since World War II . A fire destroyed much of downtown Milford on October 10th 1907 which caused significant loss of property but also demonstrated how well organized municipal services could respond to emergency situations; as a result all businesses within one block or less underwent strict sprinkler systems during that eventually successful rebuild .
