When the first town limits were drawn in 1784, there was only one road in and around Milford, which led to the current location of Main Street. The first scope mount was built on a tree near present-day Elm Street and State Road 9. The mount allowed people to see far away objects without having to take their glasses off. In 1892, a new scope mount was built on Church Hill Road in what is now the town center. This mount allowed people to view objects located at various distances from the camera. In 1926, two new scopes were installed on Schoolhouse Lane in central Milford. These scopes allowed people to view things very close up or very far away depending on their needs. Milford, Connecticut is a small town in thewestern corner of Connecticut. It was settled by English colonists in 1664 and has been a part of the state of Connecticut since 1701. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Milford is located on the north bank of the river Mystic and is bordered to the northwest by Saybrook and to the east by Waterbury. The first permanent settler in what would become Milford was John Harper who arrived in 1664 with his family from London. He built a log cabin on the bank of the Mystic River, about two miles west of what would become Milford Center. Harper's cabin served as headquarters for several years until it burned down in 1669. A second settler, George White, built another log cabin on nearby land which he called " housetop." White later donated land to Milford for public school purposes. The first school in what would become Milford was opened in 1701 when Revs John Woolridge and Samuel Willard took up residence at "Housetop Farm". At that time, only three students were enrolled in school each week: one student from Hartford Township (now West Ham) and two students from Saybrook Township (now Sayville). In 1812, after an attempt by Congress to buy lands east of Newtown Creek failed due to lack of agreement among states regarding boundary lines, President James Knoebel purchased 1,080 acres directly across Newtown Creek from Revs Samuel Willard and John Woolridge – now known as East Hampton Village – for $2 per acre ($40 per thousand acres). This purchase gave ownership of all present-day East Hampton Village including most of Waterbury Township (now North Haven) as well as much territory extending into Brookfield County (now Derby), Tolland County (now Norwich), Putnam County (now Danbury), Litchfield County (now Meriden), New Haven County (later Hartford), Fairfield County (laterSpringfield), New Britain County(laterNew York City), and parts of Stamford Province(laterConn.) In 1835-36 Robert Treat bought 817 more acres along Mystic River adjacent to what are now Manchester Road and Milton Street for $7 per acre ($160 per thousand acres). These purchases created today’s downtown area including downtown Waterbury; Northampton Square; Central Park; First Congregational Church; Morristown Cemetery; State House Complex; Upper Marketplace District; Railroad Station Plaza etc., while leaving pockets near Bolton Landing Road/Route 8 between Manchester Rd./Route 9W & Route 12E etc., still used today by locals or visitors looking for undeveloped agricultural land without legal pads or housing developments possible nearby like today's Southwick Millenium Park just southwest NY border & Black Rock Harbor just southwest Long Island Sound
