Milford is home to the Colt revolver company and has been called "The handguns capital of the world." The town's first settler was Nicholas Rowe in 1768. Milford was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1664 and became a town on December 12, 1784. It incorporated as a city on January 27, 1836. The original name of the town may have been derived from the nearby village of Minnewaska (now Westport). In 1802, John Bowles donated land to build what would become Yale University; this donation has been called "the moat around Yale." As Yale grew and enrollment increased, so too did its need for more space and money to maintain buildings and infrastructure. Milford voted to annex with Hartford on April 26, 1907. In 1898, Milford instituted its own school system which remains in place today. Other important institutions located in or near Milford include Yale University School of Medicine (founded in 1902), East High School (founded in 1925), and The mesquite corporation headquarters building completed in 1966 which now houses the Community Foundation of New Havenshire
The town of Milford was founded in 1764 by John Milford, a woolen merchant. It became a borough in 1828 and again as an incorporated town in 1903. The population of thetown increased from 3,500 to 25,000 during the 20th century. In 1960, it merged with the neighboring village of East Haven to form the larger city of East Haven.
