Milford is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 27,584 at the 2010 census. The town lies on the southern edge of the Black Hills National Forest and is part of the Hartford–West Hartford metropolitan area. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Milford in 1632 by way of New London and Windsor. The first permanent settler was Nicholas Davenport, who built a cabin on the banks of the Connecticut River in 1636. Over time, other residents added to Milford's nucleus: John Morse (1668-1745), Ebenezer Vetch (1686-1755), Christopher Gadsden (1701-1764), and Increase Mather (1688-1773). In 1784, when Connecticut became a state, Milford became one of its towns. In 1838 it incorporated as a city under the name of West Haven; however, this incorporation failed to gain traction and it reverted to its original form as a town in 1839. On July 1, 1957, portions of neighboring Derby were moved from Fairfield County into Fairfield Township so that they could be annexed into Milford; this annexation created an additional municipality with a population exceeding 20K people for which there was no public outcry or opposition from either party due to lack thereof within either township orMilford itself. This event made Milford one municipality with more than 25K people instead of just 25K residents as it had been before 2007 when parts of Derby were annexed into Milford while still being part of Fairfield County

In 1840, General Oliver Hazard Perry set up shop here as part of his purchase of land along the river for military purposes from Lord Fairfax (the father of George Washington). Burr's Brewery was founded here in 1865 by Samuel Curtisbrandt Burr Jr., who also started America's first paper mill in Derbyville; it closed its doors in 1971 but left some legacy behind including murals inside its building that depict everyday life at Burr's brewery during that era A new shopping center called The Mills opened downtown in 1984 which anchored what is now known as Webster Place Mall across from Bridgeport University’s main campus Today Milford is home to many businesses such as Bradley International Airport (IATA: MOW), TPC Ryes Valley Forge Resort & Conference Center (), Sears Holdings Corporation (), Foxwoods casino () and several thousand residents within walking distance of various retail districts like Webster Place Mall (), Main Street (), Northbridge Crossing () and Southbridge Crossing (). On November 2nd,, 2006 Mayor Patricia Devereaux announced that plans had surfaced for a new high school located on Rowe Road off Route 33 near Interstate 95 – much to applause from residents throughout Townsend Square (). This project however stalled due primarily to lack funding However Devereaux says she remains committed to pushing through any proposed amendments or projects that may come downriver should future funding become available
