The agrarian society known as the Pequot Tribe had long claimed lands east of Milford along the Mystic River because they considered them part of their ancestral homeland. In 1827, Yale became an independent university under President Drury’s administration with its own Board of Trustees; this change led to increased competition among American colleges for students and funding from state legislatures. By 1800, there were over 2200 people living in Milford Village—about one-third of all residents in Hartford County—and many businesses had been started by early pioneers such as Mr. Smith’s Wharf Company (founded 1792), Poultney & Sons Ironmongers (founded 1798), Mrs. Porter’s Furniture Store (established 1800), Mr./Mrs.[?] Furman’s Clothing Store (established 1802), etc.). The village gradually grew larger as more families moved into it; during the late 19th century most residents worked outside the village or within 10 miles of it through agriculture or manufacturing activities such as boatbuilding, tanning skins, papermaking etc.; some still live there today! As commerce grew more complex and transportation improved over time, Milford slowly lost its importance within Hartford County but continued to be an important center for education with numerous affiliated institutions including Yale University (1821), Brown University(1835), Simmons College(1876) – now Widener University – Holyoke College(1905)and two technical schools: Eastern Technical School(opened 1902) which taught electricians/ linemen; western Technical School opened 1931 which taught architects/ engineers During World War II much activity took place within close proximity to factories located around Jericho Road where war materials were being manufactured including munitions plants at Bridgeport Arsenal (#1) and Westchester Arsenal (#2). By 1945 most production had stopped but some factories continued until after hostilities ended in 1945

In 1922, the United States Supreme Court ruled in "Plessy v Ferguson" that separate schools were unconstitutional under Section 1 of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.
